How is $50 for a new video game "kind of steep"? The price of video games has not changed too much in the past several decades. I paid $45 for Quest for Glory 2, which came out in 1990, which is not too far off from $50 (inflation not included, either). With the exception of new A-list games on PS3 and Xbox 360 (generally starting closer to $60), the price of many games has gone down, especially for PCs.
It might be interesting to see if games for phones become a profitable revenue stream for game developers since they can skip several of the middle men via downloading games, instead of through traditional retail.
One thing which has surprised me is how many Portal 2 advertisements I've seen on buses or billboards. I've rarely seen video games advertised to such an extent, so that was certainly different.
There are several factors that go into it. First and foremost, he mentioned the original game was kinda short. Something that could probably be beaten between the 10-15 hour mark by a newbie. If Portal 2 is just as short, it's not worth the full retail price since the average game typically lasts at least three days and usually can go as far up as 72 hours of playtime.
This isn't a major concern for me though. The reason Valve gives in their developers comments for original portal being such a short pack-in was to test the waters for this strange concept. If Portal didn't take off like it did, it'd be no big investment to cry over. Now that they see it's a success, they'll be willing to take more risks to make it a worthy standalone product.
Another factor is that downloadable games don't have printed materials, shipping costs and other middleman costs associated with them. The average price of a downloadable game tends to be $10-20 cheaper than a physical version of the same product. Similarly Aperature costs $200 in brick and morter retail stores but only $80 from Apple's App Store.
In most cases I'd probably rather pay more for the certain rights of ownership physical media entitles me to and this is no exception since I'm getting the PS3 edition, even though I'll probably play more on my computer. However Valve's platform seems much more respectful of the end user than other digital download services, with the relatively low level of restrictiveness (for DRM) with concepts like Steamplay.

But yeah, the empire we built upon slavery and bullying is long dead...
And good riddance to it. However you can't argue that our desire to achieve and excel seems to have taken a severe knock back over the past few decades.

I find it funny when Steve demoed the first iTunes phone. The expression that he used while trying to work it showed that he was thinking of having Apple bully their way into the phone business.
I can see it destroying the "Chocolate" and "Razr" phones as it will be compared to them during the presentation.

Rosetta improvements:
I cannot believe how well Rosetta handles Photoshop and Illustrator CS2 on these new Core 2 Duos. My buddy brought his new 20" iMac over Sunday night so I could show him some little maintance tips and so I could show him how to partition the drive out. (His first Mac ever! I was so proud of him, almost like seeing your son grow up and become a man:D ) We put his Adobe CS1 on and tried it out.... Holy Cow his CS1 was almost as fast as my CS2 on my Dual Core 2.0 GHz PM G5!!!! This has come a looooong way in such a short time period. Also, I have tried out the Quad MacPros at the Apple Store with Photoshop and they run just as fast as my PM G5. I can't wait to see what happens when Adobe CS3 is UB.
As for Office....... what in the hell are people bitching about the Rosetta performance for???? It's Office people. I have not noticed hardly ANY difference in running Word and Excel on my MacBook compared to the PM G5.
Maybe I'm not concidered a "power Office user", but it runs as I would expect a Microsoft app to run.
Leopard Release:
I don't think Apple will push the release up at all. Apple never follows the intentions of others, if they did the 8 Core Mac Pro would be out already.
But I already know what is going to happen, Vista will come out with it's iLife-clone and reviews will rave about how great these new features are and we, who have been using iLife apps for over 5 years will be relegated to a footnote in the news pieces.
I'm glad that the "Get a Mac" ads have been out for the last year. It gives us some credit in the world. I love the Office commercial, how the PC is surprised that we can run Office. That is soooooo true in the business world. No one realizes that Office was actually created and ran on a Mac years before Windows even came out.

I got a little credit card looking thing in the mail. I'll be bringing it all with me just in case. The only thing I can commit to is being at the Axiotron presentation at the OWC booth at about 2:30PM for some big announcement (http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/Framework.cfm?page=/macworldexpo/mwsfo2007.html). And even that I can't commit to really. Too bad we don't have hats or something.

One can always hope. But when has this ever NOT been true for a Microsoft operating system? Windows 95 ran poorly on computers released when 3.1 was out. Windows XP had compatibility issues with many Win 98 boxes. Etc, etc. This has always been true for them. The only difference now is how long XP has been out without being significantly updated.
Agreed.... but I think to most (at the time) the Mac OS wasn't even considered. Macs were "toys" only used by "artsy" folk
The general view of the Mac has changed alot in ten years.

Thats because many, many people purchase Apple computers for the same reason they buy designer jeans or luxury cars- they want to be SEEN with it. ... And you can find most of them in public attempting to "strut their stuff".
LOL.
That probably explains the white ear buds as well.

I have one that is dropping calls 1/4 of the time. Was at Apple store. An employee there bought a bumper for his. He sounded frustrated over the dropped calls. You fanboys got to come up with something more that people are morons or whining over it. I assure you this issue is quite real.
I'm leaning towards bad batch and you just happened to get one. If you don't like it you can return it, stop bitching, and get a different phone.
I did. That's why I was at Apple. Problem still exists. Had dropped calls with this one today. Can't imagine not having an iPhone. Wait to see what will be announced. I would likely go back to 3GS with iOS4.

Hey, numbskull, is "purpoted" even a word??
And did you look at the FULL size screenshots floating around? Muy suspicious. Don't get your hopes up, bud.

The iPhone is groundbreaking don't get me wrong here I am so excited in anticipation for this to be released. On the other hand I was hugely let down by no other interesting releases, including iLife 07'!
What is this iTV nonsense? Microsoft's Xbox 360 has just been announced with a rumored better price per feature model than this thing. Already beaten to the punch Jobs threw this offstage as quickly as possible to actually impress us. Then nothing. No iLife, no new Macbook Pro case design, no official Tablet, no nothing.
Also why only Cingular? I have T-Mobile and they have much better coverage in my area! Bleh now I have to wait 3 years before I can actually use this much heralded tech.

Make it DVD quality and allow the option of burning it to a DVD and I'm there. :D
Haven't bought any TV shows, but if I could burn it to a DVD, I would probably buy some movies.

There was a mention of it tapping into the technologies already in Snow Leopard as part of the demo, so I would expect it to run on at least 10.6. Forcing everyone to upgrade to Lion in order to use FCPX doesn't seem at all likely.
Yes, FCPX is using tech already existing in SL, but we don't know what new underlying tech it uses. For instance, one thing they didn't mention is anything about QuickTime. Some expect that they using the AVFoundation framework being introduced to Lion. If so, they would have to bake it into FCPX to allow installation on SL, or supply an upgrade to SL with this new functionality, likely as part of a ProKit Update via Software Update. The simpler solution, especially for maintenance, is simply to require you to upgrade to Lion which will have AVFoundation, not to mention, other new tech.
The reason I'm not 100% behind requiring Lion is because asking so many to upgrade from SL seems a bit extreme to me too. It would slow down adoption of FCPX because so many users can't quickly move forward when they depend on other software & hardware. Still, I wouldn't put that requirement past Apple.
EDIT: In this video (http://vimeo.com/22329493) at about 4:14 the guy says 'leveraging the best of Snow Leopard'. That is an indicator that SL will be supported.

I hope Apple isn't going to sell these movies at the same quality as their current video downloads.
As of now, the only thing they are good for are iPods; on a computer screen it looks terrible. Here here. They are even encoding HD 16x9 TV Shows in 4x3 - unbelieveable. For last year being the year of HD, the iTunes Store Video Encode Department apparently didn't get the memo. :( :confused:I, for one, dont think I'll ever download a movie off iTMS. I was downloading the 1hr + pilot for Psych the other day and that took forever... I'm only excited about the new 'Pods that are bound to be part of such an announcementMe too. Yeah that Psych Pilot was originally tranmitted in HD 16 x 9. So I was shocked to find when I opened it that it is in 4x3. An excellent looking encode. But the completely and lamely wrong aspect ratio. Really shocked me to find nobody caught that on the way in. Looks like the encoders never watch TV.

People who agree to work with biographers do so because they want to have control or a strong degree of input of an authoritative biography. They want to make sure their motives and their side of the story (or revisionistic history to cover up mistakes and misdeeds) are read to the public.
Certainly, that would be an attractive idea to an important person who is seriously ill. Though nothing is of use to use when we're dead, the thought of a well-regarded legacy does provide comfort and purpose to those who are given advance warning of their death.
I'm not saying that's the case here with Jobs. But if it were, I wouldn't be surprised.
Bernie Ecclestone has just bought out an authorised biography that he fully cooperated on and he is in the best of health, works full time and travels to every F1 race so I would not write off Jobs on the basis of a book

You didn't mention your budget, if it's on the low side, I'd go with a Linux NAS, you could build the whole thing for under $4k.
Budget is about 10,000 USD, I figured maybe if I provide this information you all could suggest some more specific pieces of equipment.
Also, my internet connection is a T1 and I have seen it go up to 5mb down 3mb up.
